Holiday mansion in southern France
Mamaison Midi, Homps
The mansion is situated in HOMPS, a nice little place 25 km north of Narbonne in the most southern part of France, the MIDI in the natural park Languedoc and amidst the vine growing area of the Minervois.
Endless sand beaches, green hills, snow-covered peaks, vine grapes in the sun, prestigious castles and abbeys, old cities of the Cathars, wild gorges, rivers to bath in, sleepy fishing villages...the Languedoc holds particular attractions for everyone.
Our village of HOMPS is directly on the Canal du Midi which was built during the times of Louis XIV to link two seas: the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.
It takes you abt. 25kms to go to Narbonne with its famous cathedral, 30kms to Carcassonne with its famous middle-aged castle, and an airport, 35 min. to reach the beaches, 80 kms to the Pyrenees and 120 kms to the Spanish border.
Homps is a nice and peaceful village that has kept its genuine village character. You'll find your boulanger (the baker's) and your boucherie ( the butcher's), a small grocer's and a supermarket. Of course, there is the church, the post office, a petrol station, five restaurants on the quai and an internet café. To see a larger supermarket and more shops, you can go to Olonzac (1 km) and Lézignan (8 kms) where is a station, too.
You can rent a bike and get tourist information (e.g. for renting boats) in the Capitainerie, our direct neighbour. Here, you can also have public internet access provided you bring along your own laptop. It takes you 10 minutes to have a bath in the nice nearby lake, the Lac Jouarres.
The mansion is part of an 200-year-old former wine-growing estate and is situated directly on the Canal du Midi. There are 3 independent flats with an exceptional view on the canal, on boats chugging along, on the vineyards and the nearby hills of the Montagne Noire, the black mountains. The house is quietly situated to the edge of the village in a blind alley just leading to a strolling and cycling path along the canal.
